WhatsApp and Mobile Money in Somalia: Designing a Better Customer Journey

Many businesses can generate enquiries through social media or search, move the conversation into WhatsApp, and then complete payment through mobile money. The challenge is making that journey consistent enough to scale.

Start with a clear entry point

Use click-to-WhatsApp links from service pages, campaign landing pages and social profiles only where chat is a sensible next step. Include context in the button or prefilled message so staff know what the customer is asking about.

Structure the conversation

Train staff to confirm the customer’s need, price or scope, payment method and next step in a consistent order. Templates can improve speed, but they should still feel relevant to the enquiry.

Build payment confirmation into the process

After payment, send a clear acknowledgment and explain delivery, booking or fulfillment timing. Keep a record in the appropriate business system rather than relying only on chat history. For larger operations, automation and integration can reduce manual reconciliation.

Protect trust

Never ask customers for passwords or sensitive account credentials. Publish official phone numbers on the website so customers can verify that they are speaking to the right business.
